In the early 90s, Mozambique was a nation etched with the memories of conflict and grappling with the stark realities of poverty. Despite that, a different kind of story began to unfold. This quiet narrative, rooted in faith and a vision for the future, replaced tales of political upheaval or economic struggle.

The year was 1992. Mozambique, had emerged from a protracted civil war and was in the throes of a devastating drought. The country was recognised globally as a nation facing profound hardship. Amidst this backdrop, a passage from Jeremiah. The Lord’s instruction to purchase land even as the city faced capture – resonated deeply. This conviction, as the founders, Peet and Erma Jansen Van Vuren recount, felt like a direct word: to acquire land in this nation in dire straits.

Mozambique’s Political History 

Mozambique struggled its way through political shifts, the devastation of a civil war, and a crippling drought. The international community, including numerous missionary and faith-based organisations, stepped in to offer support.  These groups often played a vital role in providing humanitarian aid. They established essential services and contributed to the long process of rebuilding communities. 

In Mozambique, where shattered infrastructure and scarce social services were the norm, missionaries often led the way. They provided basic healthcare, education, and spiritual guidance. They embodied a commitment to holistic ministry, addressing both the physical and spiritual needs of the population. This environment featured both immense need and growing openness to international engagement. This set the stage for faith-driven initiatives aiming to make a tangible difference.

Nascer do Sol Mozambique: The Early Days

Jeremiah’s message echoed. Essentially, the vision would blossom into Nascer do Sol Lodge. A haven on the shores of Mozambique. Its very name – “Sunrise” in Portuguese – speaks to the enduring hope that can emerge even from the most challenging of circumstances. This is the story of how a calling to a land in need evolved into a beacon of hospitality on Mozambique’s captivating coastline.

The initial connection to Mozambique came in 1994. Through the Igreja Reformada, an opportunity to contribute to the rebuilding efforts by constructing a church arised. Projects providing housing for teachers and missionaries followed. Yet, the underlying vision of acquiring land persisted. In those early days of Mozambique opening to foreign investment, the path to land ownership was complex. It was often tied to existing structures or rights. Finding rightful owners proved to be a significant hurdle.

The Start Of Something New

A turning point arrived in April 1994. Friends with fond memories of pre-war holidays in Mozambique suggested a trip to Praia de Messano – a coastal spot roughly 40 kilometers north of XaiXai. This seemingly casual invitation would prove pivotal.

By early 1995, circumstances aligned in an unexpected way. Someone identified the rightful owner of the beachfront land in the Praia de Messano area. A Mr Bahuli had been granted this land by the government for his service to Frelimo soldiers. Remarkably, this was the very location the friends had suggested. 

In September 1995, we held the first Missions Conference under the open Mozambican sky at Praia de Messano. And so the bureaucratic wheels began to turn. 

Finally, in 1998, construction commenced on what would become Nascer do Sol Lodge in Chizavane, Mozambique. The name itself seems to echo the journey: from a time of hardship to the promise of a new dawn.
